Hey Hey Hey / Scrapbook & Cards Today Guest Designer

Hey there, friends!  I’m super excited to be a guest for Scrapbook & Cards Today this week!  I jumped at the chance when Nicole invited me to design a layout for Mixed Media Week.

You know I love adding mixed media products to my scrapbook pages, so I really went to town on this page.  I decided to combine mixed media and cut files. I was inspired by some of the stickers on the Dear Lizzy Accent & Phrase Stickers sheet from the Lovely Day collection. I really liked the “Hey Hey Hey” phrase, so typed out “Hey” really large in my Silhouette software using the Bromello font and welded it together. I used a few papers from the Lovely Day 6x6 Paper pad to back the open letters and added some adhesive foam behind it to make it pop off the page. I love taking white cardstock and giving it some color, so I pulled out some of my Shimmerz Inklingz and Creameez Paints in coordinating colors. I used one of my favorite techniques to spread the paint around, which is using plastic packaging. It’s really easy and fun, and you always get an artsy look. You just add some paint to the packaging, flip the packaging over onto your background paper and smush it around.

Here you can see the dimension from the large cut file. Foam is really great for adding that depth and creating shadows. I wanted to add some of that beautiful aqua color to my page, so I used some watercolors and my small water brush to color in some flowers from the Color Me Pretty paper from Dear Lizzy. I fussy cut them out and used them as layers and embellishments in three spots around the page. I knew I wanted to use the “Hey Hey Hey” stickers since that was my first inspiration, so I stuck them around the page as well. I wanted to add a bit of shine to the page, so I used some sequins from SpiegelMom Scraps.

Another fun thing I love to do on my pages is add tangled thread. It’s a great go-to embellishment when you need a pop of color somewhere. Plus it gives awesome texture! I love how all these colors look together here, and the thread just adds another fun layer of color. To add even more detail without color, I used some of the Dear Lizzy Washi Tape from the Lovely Day collection. I very carefully cut out some of the flowers from the tape and stuck them around the layout.

I love using black & white photos for awesome contrast on my pages. If the photos have clashing colors or don’t really go with the papers you’re using, black and white is a great option. Some photos need to be scrapped in color, but these photos had some light tan, dark red and a green color. I love how the colors of the papers and stickers look against the dramatic colors in the photos. And I didn’t want to cover up any of the cut file, so I layered the photos under it.

I’ve learned to always look closely at my patterned papers for images that can be fussy cut and used for embellishments. These flowers were perfect for coloring and cutting, so I did just that. I love that you can customize them to whatever color you want. And I love how they curled up at the ends once they dried.

I hope I never run out of this awesome Dear Lizzy floral washi tape.  I love how it looks like you just sketched out a flower!

Here's one last close-up of all the fun dimension and messiness :)

I hope this inspires you to give mixed media a try on your scrapbook pages. You can do a little or a lot, and that’s the beauty of it. It’s fun to get a little messy and play around. Thank you so much for stopping by today!  And a huge THANK YOU to Nicole and everyone else over at SCT for having me!
